K001: Rieko Okuda / Mia Dyberg, Glasscut
12” limited edition vinyl LP
An alto saxophone and acoustic piano engage in an intimate musical dialogue, reflecting on the current state of improvised music. Okuda and Dyberg’s album unites two artists at the peak of their musical collaboration, deconstructing jazz history into shimmering fragments, reassembling them in new forms that deliberately move away from traditional references. The music incorporates diverse influences—glimpses of classical composers like Webern and Prokofiev, abstract electronic elements reimagined acoustically, and a genuine spirit of exploration seeking a unique musical fusion.
Rooted in jazz, the Okuda/Dyberg Duo performs conceptual improvisations that include pulse, durations, interactions, natural/everyday life objects, soundalized: water dropping, light rain comes to a coffee-filter dripping, construction work or glass breaking sounds. Born in 2018. Glasscut is their third release – the first on vinyl – after Nigatsu 二月 (2019) and Naboer (2020).
Reviews:
„Oblique and contemplative“ (Peter Margasak / Nowhere Street)
„Two skilled and graceful instrumentalists" (Luca Majer / Blow Up Magazine)
„On “Glasscut”, Japanese pianist Rieko Okuda and Danish saxophonist Mia Dyberg come together. It’s what anglophiles would call a “match made in heaven”, as the two musicians have excellent chemistry: they listen and respond to one another, and they’re always willing to hold back when the music calls for it.“ (roth / Frankfurter Allgemeine)
Mia Dyberg plays in the field of jazz and free improvisation. Her unique melodic expression is created through sound experiments and Scandinavian melancholy. She composes for the Mia Dyberg Trio, which plays free jazz with narrative motifs and timestretch grooves. Clean Feed Records released Ticket! which was awarded 4 stars in Downbeat Magazine. She is Berlin-based and a permanent member of the Dadaist improv collective Klub Demboh and plays regularly with Axel Dörner, Michael Griener and Antonio Borghini (among others). «Mia Dyberg is a saxophonist who is at home in free improvisation. But not without being “head and shoulders” in what she does. Dyberg's playing is controlled and easy to grasp. She masters the free, but also has a good feel for jazz history» (Jan Granlie, Salt Peanuts).
